Three's a Crowd? Not When it Comes to Decorating!

Ever walk into a beautifully decorated space and wonder how they achieved that perfect balance? Whether you're a homemaker wanting to spice up your living space, a college student personalizing your dorm room, or simply someone who appreciates a well-organized and aesthetically pleasing environment, this timeless principle can be your secret weapon.

Growing up, I found joy in watching YouTube videos of people meticulously cleaning their homes, organizing rugs, and decluttering countertops. I was captivated by documentaries on home improvement and organization techniques. Books and blogs on crafting and DIY projects fueled my passion further. I'm delighted to know that the present me hasn't forgotten that wide-eyed 13-year-old somewhere.  This fascination with creating beautiful and functional spaces stayed with me, shaping who I am today.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon a design principle that transformed how I approach any space, big or small: The Rule of Thirds.

This concept, originating in photography, has transcended boundaries and become a valuable tool in various creative fields. It was coined by John Thomas Smith in 1797 in his book "Remarks on Rural Scenery," although he credits its inspiration to Sir Joshua Reynolds. This is where I pretend to be super knowledgeable and link a source. Here, read more.

Now, in the realm of interior design, this principle encourages grouping items in threes to achieve a more natural and visually engaging look. There's a scientific reason behind this. Odd numbers present a slight challenge to our brains, making them inherently more captivating. This aligns perfectly with the principle of "omne trium perfectum" – a Latin phrase meaning "everything that comes in threes is perfect."

Now, here's a confession - I'm a serial re-organizer. It's an itch I just can't seem to scratch.

Every few weeks, an inexplicable force takes over me, compelling me to rearrange every nook and cranny of our humble abode. Bookshelves get rearranged by color-coding or alphabetical order (I can never decide which is more aesthetically pleasing). Throw pillows get tossed around like confetti, and my poor potted plants get dizzy and confused as they get shuffled from one sun-drenched corner to another. My lovely husband has learned to embrace this quirky ritual of mine, though not without occasional exasperated sighs and gentle reminders that we're not millionaires.

But here's the thing: Can you really put a price tag on the pure joy of a perfectly curated and ever-evolving living space? That's what I thought! Now that you're in on my secret weapon, here are five easy ways I use to incorporate the Rule of Threes in my home.

  • Color Scheme

Select a palette of three complementary or contrasting colors. Think of a dominant color (60%), a secondary color (30%), and an accent color (10%) for a cohesive look.

  • Furniture

Arrange furniture in conversation areas of three. Flank your sofa with two armchairs or ottomans, creating a social space where people can easily face each other. This creates an inviting triangle where people can easily face each other while seated.

  • Fabric

Layering with textiles is another way to apply the rule of three. Mix and match throw pillows, blankets, or area rugs in coordinating colors and patterns, keeping in mind the principle of odd numbers.

  • Decorative Accents

Tiny accessories can make a big impact. Group sets of three vases, sculptures, or candles on shelves, mantels, or coffee tables. The beauty lies in the variety – these pieces can differ in size, shape, and color, adding depth and dimension without monotony.

  • Wall Art

Hang a trio of artwork or photographs on a wall to create a focal point. Whether it's a series of framed prints, paintings, or photographs, arranging them in a vertical or horizontal row can add balance and harmony to the space.

There you go! Even if you manage to work with just one area of your decor at a time, the Rule of Threes is a great starting point. Plus, it encourages creativity! You can utilize what you already have around the house, rearranging existing items or repurposing them in new ways. The beauty lies in personalization! Don't be afraid to break the mold if it means incorporating pieces you truly love. After all, the most important ingredient in creating a beautiful space is filling it with pieces, colors, and places you love. So, grab your imaginary (or real) measuring tape, unleash your inner designer, and get ready to transform your home with the magic of three! Much love,

Gracia
